Bai Shao (White Peony Root) - Liquid Extract (Tincture):
The Chinese Herb Bai Shao is derived from the root of peony plant (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) and is a very widely utilized herb in the practice of Chinese medicine. It is said to "soothe the Liver" and is a constituent of a wide variety of formulas which run the gamut from those which help to regulate the menses, those which relieve pain, those which help calm anger/relieve stress (and many others). Thoughts on how to incorporate Bai Shao into your supplement regimen:- Bai Shao nourishes Liver blood and yin to address Liver blood deficiency, general symptoms of which include: anemia, sallow/pale complexion, brittle/pale nails, dizziness, and vertigo.
- It is also a very common and important herb for addressing a variety of obstetric and gynecological disorders with chronic Liver blood deficiency somewhere in the pattern. Symptoms addressed by the addition of Bai Shao to a formula include irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, uterine bleeding, and gestational and postpartum disorders.
- Bai Shao softens the Liver and is often used to address pain and cramping associated with PMS as well (as in the formula Xiao Yao Wan)
- IN TCM theory, the Liver is responsible for keeping the tendons and ligature soft, supple, and flexible throughout the body; thus, Bai shao can be a great help to for stiff, creaky, and/or painful joints (or simply to maintain flexibility and ease of movement).
