What is Plum Flower - Ma Zi Ren?

Plum Flower - Ma Zi Ren is a Chinese Herbal Medicine formula designed for those with habitual constipation marked by stagnation, heat, and dryness. In practical terms, this translates into cases of chronic constipation in which the stools that do pass are very dry and firm. The formula works by generating fluids and moistening the intestines; this makes it useful for elderly persons who get constipated often and would benefit from treatment with an emollient (stool-softener). It also can be used to address IBS* and colitis* when used appropriately in conjunction with a trained TCM practitioner.

Dosage Instructions for Plum Flower - Ma Zi Ren

Ma Zi Ren should be used on an as needed basis to move the bowels when dryness in the Large Intestines has led to the individual becoming constipated. 8-12 teapills, 3x/day is appropriate as an initial dosing to achieve the desired results, and then dosage level should be reduced to the minimum amount necessary to give a result. This formula is intended to be used from a few-weeks to no longer than a few months, after which time period the appropriate constitutional formula should be used to maintain balance over the long term. Note that there are strong purgative herbs in this formula and so caution should be used in patients with especially weak constitutions-- it is for this reason that consulting with a trained TCM practitioner is recommended when administering this formula (to the elderly or convalescent). Contraindicated for use during pregnancy. Use caution when nursing as Da Huang can pass through the breast milk causing colic and diarrhea in infants.
